Dallas shooter acted alone, says police

Micah Xavier Johnson (25), the gunman, was an Army veteran with no criminal record against him

The shooter who killed five police officials and injured seven in Dallas, Texas earlier in the week acted alone, the police said but was planning the attack for a long time. Initially, the police had suspected that more shooters could have been involved as firing came from at least two directions.

Micah Xavier Johnson, the gunman killed by the police using a robot that propelled an explosive at him, was shooting from both places, the police later found. Other suspects held by the police turned out to be either innocent bystanders or protestors.

Johnson (25), a U.S Army veteran had served in Afghanistan and had no criminal record. Search at his home yielded bomb-making materials, ballistic vests, rifles, ammunition and literature on black protest movements.

The sorrow and shock that engulfed America in the hours after the incident appeared later on Friday to have given way to a deeply divisive political debate, despite calls for calm from leading political figures, including presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Fox News termed the Dallas shootings “an act of terrorism”, a term they do not use for incidents involving white shooters, and launched a campaign against ‘Black Lives Matter’ protestors, calling them ‘police haters’.

President Barack Obama is cutting short his Europe tour by a day and is scheduled to return on Sunday. He will travel to Dallas soon.

Mr. Trump termed it “an attack on our country,” and also called the police shootings of two African-American men earlier in the week “senseless, tragic”. “Our nation has become too divided. Too many Americans feel like they’ve lost hope. Crime is harming too many citizens. Racial tensions have gotten worse, not better,” Mr. Trump said.

Ms. Clinton said “white Americans need to do a better job of listening when African-Americans talk about seen and unseen barriers faced daily. We need to try, as best we can, to walk in one another’s shoes. To imagine what it would be like if people followed us around stores, or locked their car doors when we walked past…”

Mr. Trump’s assertion that “racial tensions have gotten worse, not better” targets Mr. Obama. After Mr. Obama’s ascent to the White House, white supremacist organisations have grown dramatically in the country, but ironically, many conservative commentators blame the President for “not doing enough” to bridge the racial divide. Ms. Clinton also became the target for asking white Americans to listen more to African Americans.

The investigation that followed the Dallas shooting itself became an illustration of the racial biases that dominate the society and the police. A black man, who had a rifle slung over this shoulders and was part of the protest, was declared a ‘person of interest’ his photographs displayed on TV channels before he turned himself in to the police. Texas allows civilians to openly carry guns, and it is not unusual to see people carrying assault rifles openly in the streets and shops.

The shooting has also triggered another round of hostile debate on gun control. While President Obama, Ms. Clinton and a host of other Democratic and civil rights leaders called for sensible gun control, conservative politicians and media rejected it altogether.

Scratchy Patriots run into in-form Amazon Warriors

These aren't best of times for Faf du Plessis. Still with just one win from four games, St Kitts and Nevis Patriots have managed to stay on the third spot in the points table and a loss here would severely dent their chances going forward.

Du Plessis and his men take on Guyana Amazon Warriors in their next 2016 Caribbean Premier League clash at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. Amazon Warriors, the current table-toppers, have functioned like a well-oiled unit and are unbeaten so far in the three games they have played. To add to that, they defeated the Patriots in their opening clash by four wickets. Clearly, the onus is on the visitors to make things happen.

Patriots are coming off a demoralising loss against Barbados Tridents. There have been patchy performances with the bat and the bowling is too heavily dependent on Samuel Badree.

Eric Simmons, the coach, in his pre-match press conference, stressed on the fact that the team is close to firing on all cylinders. Impressed by the performance of Devon Thomas and Evin Lewis, Simmons tipped them to come good in the next clash. However, the think-tank will be well aware of the fact that they'll need a much-improved performance from the batting unit if they want to topple the Amazon Warriors. The biggest threat to the Patriots will be Sohail Tanvir, who is the highest wicket-taker, with eight wickets so far.

The Amazon Warriors have been ruthless in the tournament - getting better with every passing game. After winning their opening clash by four wickets, they trounced Trinbago Knight Riders by six wickets before taking the top-of-table clash against Jamaica Tallawahs by seven wickets. They walk into the contest as favorites but such things hardly matter once the game begins.

When: Guyana Amazon Warriors vs St Kitts and Nevis Patriots, Match 10, 1200PM local time.

Where: Providence Stadium in Guyana.

What they said:

"From the (warm-up) camp we were all about getting back home somewhere in the top two, and that's what we did, and to leave home (leg of matches) as the top team. I'm sure that if we can play the way that we're playing, or continue the way that we're playing, that we can end up going on from here. It's just up to us to stay positive, and that's what we've been doing so far, and once it continues I'm sure we'll stay on top." - Dwayne Smith on Amazon Warriors good run.

"I think that we're in good spirits. Obviously we would have preferred a win or two more under our belts, but that's not always the way it goes. We've played some good cricket, one or two slips have cost us obviously, but there's a lot of confidence in the squad's make-up and balance. We know the conditions here and we believe we have the squad to exploit them." - Simmons was upbeat even after his team has picked up three losses.

England vs Sri Lanka, Only T20I - Live Cricket Score

SL 140 (20.0 Ovs)
ENG 144/2 (17.3 Ovs)
England won by 8 wkts

PLAYER OF THE MATCH

Jos Buttler

The End:
Eoin Morgan ended Sri Lanka's misery on the tour with a six over the deep mid-wicket region to help England win the only T20 International by eight wickets and 15 balls to spare. With this loss, Sri Lanka have remained winless against England on the tour.

Oh, that's a drop:
Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler have done well to consolidate England's chase and put them in a commanding position. It was further helped by Sri Lanka dropping a couple of catches. As of now the hosts are cruising comfortably

No caution:
England batsmen seem to be in self-destruct mode. Chasing a relatively easy target, they are taking unnecessary risks in order to take the attack to the Sri Lankan batsmen. Jos Buttler, in specific, has been scratchy.

Early strike:
Sri Lanka have struck early as Jason Roy gets himself castled in an attempt to play a fancy scoop shot behind the wicket. He exposes his stumps and Angelo Mathews hits it.

Scotland vs Afghanistan, 1st ODI - Live Cricket Score

AFG 283/4 (47.2 Ovs)  CRR: 5.98

No result

After the early hiccup of Noor Ali Zadran, Shahzad started off on a positive note. He came out all guns blazing but threw his wicket away playing a rash shot. Javed Ahmadi and Rahmat Shah steadied the innings with a 53-run stand for the third wicket. Once Ahmadi and captain Stanikzai departed in quick succession, the play was halted due to rain. However, it turned out to be a much needed break for Afghanistan. Najibullah Zadran and Rahmat Shah started upping the ante. Rahmat slammed a brilliant hundered while Najibullah struck a quickfire fifty. They provided the much needed impetus before the rain returned and eventually the play was called off. As for Scotland bowlers are concerned, Wheal and Sharif were the pick of the bowlers. That's all we have from this time. Do join us for the second ODI which starts on Wednesday.
